পশ্চিম মেদিনীপুর: দুই স্কুল পড়ুয়ার চেষ্টায় মেদিনীপুর শহরে উদ্ধার হলো বিলুপ্তপ্রায় একটি কচ্ছপ। মেদিনীপুর শহরের ৯ নম্বর ওয়ার্ডের ধর্মা, বিবেকানন্দ নগর(উত্তর) এলাকা একটু বৃষ্টিতেই জলমগ্ন হয়। সামান্য বৃষ্টি হলেও অনেক সময় অনেক বাড়িতে জল ঢোকে। জল নিকাশি ব্যবস্থা প্রায় নেই বললেই চলে। নতুন নতুন বাড়ি হচ্ছে,যে যার নিজ চৌহদ্দি প্রাচীর দিচ্ছেন। স্বভাবতই জল বেরোনোর পথ ক্রমশঃ বদ্ধ হয়ে আসছে।
প্রতিবেশী অসিত দত্ত, স্বরূপ দত্ত, সিদ্ধার্থ শাসমল, প্রকাশ বাগ, পূর্ণেন্দু মণ্ডল প্রমুখের সাহায্যে শিক্ষক স্নেহাশিস চৌধুরী জল নিকাশীর সুবিধার জন্য অস্থায়ী রাস্তা কাটিয়ে পাইপ বসান। যাতে জল দ্রুত বেরিয়ে যায়। বুধবার দুপুরে হঠাৎ লক্ষ্য করা যায় জল বেরোনো প্রায় বন্ধ।
স্নেহাশিস চৌধুরীর ছেলে বিদ্যাসাগর শিশু নিকেতনের দশম শ্রেণীর সাহসী কিশোর সোমসপ্তক চৌধুরী তার এক প্রতিবেশী সাথী পাঁচখুরী দেশবন্ধু হাইস্কুলের অষ্টম শ্রেণীর ছাত্র স্বপ্ননীল সামন্তকে সাথে নিয়ে পাইপের ভিতরে উঁকি দিতে গিয়ে আবিষ্কার করে একটি অতিকায় কচ্ছপ বসে রয়েছে। বেরোতে পারছে না। পাড়ার বড়দের সাহায্যে দীর্ঘ সময় চেষ্টার পর কচ্ছপটিকে অক্ষত অবস্থায় দুই কিশোর উদ্ধার করে।বুধবারের প্রবল বর্ষণ আর বাঙালির অন্যতম পার্বণ জামাইষষ্ঠী থাকায় বুধবার রাতে কচ্ছপটি সোমসপ্তকের মা শিক্ষিকা শবরী বসুর তত্ত্বাবধানে সোমসপ্তকদের বাড়িতে থাকে।কচ্ছপটিকে দেখতে অনেকেই ভিড় জমান। কেউ প্রস্তাব দেন নদী বা পুকুরে ছেড়ে দেবার। আবার খবর পেয়ে দু-এক জন কচ্ছপটিকে কিনতেও হাজির হয়েছিলেন।
এমতাবস্থায় পাড়ার বয়োজ্যেষ্ঠদের সাথে আলোচনা করে দুই খেলার সাথী জানায়,তারা মেদিনীপুর শহরের অরবিন্দ শিশু উদ্যানে এমন অনেক কচ্ছপকে সংরক্ষিত অবস্থায় থাকতে দেখেছে। তাই প্রায় বিলুপ্ত হতে চলা বন্যপ্রাণটি রক্ষা করতে হলে কচ্ছপটিকে অরবিন্দ শিশু উদ্যানের সংরক্ষিত স্থানে ছেড়ে দেওয়া দরকার।সেইমতো বৃহস্পতিবার সোমসপ্তকের বাবা শিক্ষক স্নেহাশিস চৌধুরী এবং স্বপ্ননীলের বাবা শিক্ষক প্রতাপ সামন্ত দুজনে মিলে বৃহস্পতিবার, অরবিন্দ শিশু উদ্যানের ছোট্ট জলাশয়ে কর্তৃপক্ষের নজরদারিতে উদ্ধার হওয়া কচ্ছপটি ছেড়ে দিয়ে আসেন।দুই কিশোরের আনন্দ আর ধরে না।শুধু পাঠ্যবইয়ের কালো অক্ষরের মধ্যে তাদের অর্জিত জ্ঞান সীমাবদ্ধ রইল না।সমাজ সচেতনতা, বিরল প্রাণ রক্ষার পরিচয় তারা রাখলো এই দুই কিশোর।তাদের এই প্রয়াসে তাদের পিতামাতারা, শিক্ষক-শিক্ষিকা যেমন গর্বিত তেমনি নবগঠিত পাড়ার ক্ষুদে সদস্য-সদস্যা থেকে বড়োরা সবাই খুশি তাদের এই মানবিক প্রয়াসে। এই ঘটনায় খুশি সোমসপ্তকের মা শবরী বসু,ভাই সান্দ্রসিগ্ধ চৌধুরী,স্বপ্ননীলের মা শম্পা সামান্ত। বন্ধুদের কাজে খুশি শ্রীতমা,শ্রীদীপের মতো অন্যান্য প্রতিবেশী কিশোর-কিশোরীরা। উল্লেখ্য সোমসপ্তকের বাবা-মা পশ্চিমবঙ্গ বিজ্ঞান মঞ্চ, মেদিনীপুর কুইজ কেন্দ্রের মতো পরিবেশ প্রেমী সংস্থা গুলির সাথে যুক্ত রয়েছেন।

In this situation, after discussing with the elders of the neighborhood, the two playmates said that they have seen many such turtles in the Arvind Shishu Udyan in Medinipur town in a protected condition. Therefore, in order to save the endangered wildlife, the tortoise needs to be released in the protected area of Arvind Shishu Udyan. The joy of the two teenagers is no longer there. The knowledge they have acquired is not limited to the black letters of the textbook. These two teenagers are known for their social awareness and rare life saving.
